容疑者は一人だけ（1巻 episode1）
冬のある日、大学生の久能整は
アパートを訪ねてきた
大隣警察署の刑事たちに、
大学の同回生で高校の同窓である
寒河江が殺害された一件で、
警察署に同行され任意で
取り調べを受ける。
寒河江は昨晩10時ごろ、
久能に似た人物と
口論していたのが目撃されたという。
久能は犯行をきっぱり否定し、
疑う藪警部補たちのもとへ
毎日聴取に通うことになる。
反抗期の娘に悩む乙部巡査、
先輩らの圧力を原因に伸び悩む
風呂光巡査、
妊娠中の妻の態度に苛立つ
池本巡査、かつて起こった
冤罪事件に囚われている
青砥巡査部長は
久能の独特の思想や
語り口に次第に興味を惹かれていく。
聴取3日目以降、
犯行に使用された果物ナイフや、
久能のノートパソコンから
寒河江から金を借りた借用書など、
次々と物証が出て疑いが濃厚になる。
久能は風呂光にアリバイ探しを頼んだが、
ナイフが盗まれた形跡はなかった。
久能は1年前アパートの鍵を
落としたことなどを
調べ直してくれるよう頼む。
5日目、藪の聴取を受けた久能は、
高校3年生の時に寒河江が
父親から買い与えられた
高級車を自慢していたが、
夏休みが明けると
成績低下を理由に取り上げられたと話す。
実はその夏に寒河江が
轢き逃げ事故を起こし、
その被害者が藪警部補の
妻と息子だったのではないかと推理する。
さらに風呂光の調査で、
藪が久能の鍵を拾って
届け出ていたことが判明。
そのとき合鍵を作り、
ナイフを盗み証拠を捏造したと言い当てる。
藪は久能に、
「妻子への復讐のため寒河江を殺した」ことを白状し、
泣き崩れるが、
「轢き逃げは寒河江ではないかもしれない」
という久能の推理どおり、
轢き逃げしたのは寒河江を脅して
車を借りた部活の先輩であることが判明する。
本当に面白いのはこれからです。
