時代は1960年代、
沖縄がアメリカ軍の統治下にありました、
この物語の主人公は、比嘉暢子（のぶこ）の一家です、
場所は、沖縄本島北部のやんばる地方で
サトウキビ畑を営んでいます、
暢子の両親は畑で働き、
暢子と 兄、姉、妹は
けんかが絶えませんが、
仲良く過ごす日々です、
子供の頃の暢子にとっての「遊び」は、
野山で何かを採って食べること、
暢子は家族の中でも
美味しいものに目がなく、
食べることが大好きな子です、
ある日、家族と初めて外食へ行きます、
訪れたレストランで食べた西洋料理に
暢子は心から感激していました、
そんな幸せな日々の裏側で、
暢子の父が急逝してしまいます、
父の急逝後、母は四人の子供たちを
養うために懸命に働きます、
工事現場のまかない業務です、
そんな母を助けるために
暢子は家で食事の支度を
担当することになります、
そして月日は流れて、
沖縄が本土復帰を果たす1972年、
暢子は高校卒業を迎えます、
暢子の夢は西洋料理の
